Yellowstone National Park, USA
A snowmobile guide once told me that a bison is a 2000 pound animal that never gets its morning coffee. To me, this quote neatly summarizes the character of North America’s most iconic animal, and this photo adeptly demonstrates it.

Friends until mating season, these bulls take to the road for their winter travel, and are not intimidated by man or machine, and are happy not to share. Leaving a little more than a snowmobile width on the left shoulder, the unyielding beats forced us to pass them. I prefocused my 14mm for the pending encounter and moved cautiously forward, camera in right hand, and applying the throttle using my left. The exposure was exactly what I hoped for: a true representation of how bison shares the winter roads in Yellowstone: with an attitude.
Canon EOS 6D, 14mm F/2.8L II, 1/1600s, f/7.1, ISO800.
