Mother and cub, play.
A yearling polar bear cub somersaults beneath its mother. I was fortunate to spend an entire morning with this family unit, photographing them on the frozen tundra outside my truck near Churchill, Manitoba. As October transitions into November and the air temperature plummets, ice is blown in from the north and rapidly begins to accumulate. As one of the first areas to freeze on Hudson Bay, the sea-ice comes early here and provides the bears with their winter hunting platform early. This explains the high concentration of polar bears found in the area, including this mother and cub. The cub, eager to follow its mother for its second winter out on the ice, spends the days playing, nursing and exploring its surroundings. Without any siblings to play with, the cub focuses its energy on its mother. It is believed that young cubs spend a lot of time playing together to bond the animals to the family unit. The dynamics of a mother and cub playing together is heartwarming to observe in a natural setting. As this image of the somersaulting cubs beneath its mother demonstrates, adorably.
